The tech giant is saying that hackers tried to monitor email accounts of US government officials, Chinese activists, military personnel and journalists.” (Fox Business) Google said in a blog post on Wednesday… “This campaign, which appears to originate from Jinan, China, affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users…” The type of hacking this time was different than an earlier hack found to have originated in China. The Economist has the details. “Unlike previous Chinese attacks … this one was clever but simple. Targets received plausible-seeming ‘phishing’ e-mails, often sent from faked State Department addresses… Clicking on that produced a bogus Gmail screen. Anyone unwise enough to give their login and password would make their past and future e-mails, and contacts, available to the snooper.” Although the hacking was done with computers in China, a spokesperson for the Chinese government denies it had any involvement. “The Chinese government has always opposed any criminal activity that tries to harm the internet and computers, including hacking, and will punish these crimes according to the law. … The so-called allegation that the Chinese government supports hacking is completely fabricated with ulterior motives.” (The Telegraph) His is …
